Lifting, drooping, or fully detached car badges are one of the most visible signs of age on any vehicle. Re-Tape® exists to fix that — with OEM-grade precision, skilled technicians, and a 72-hour turnaround from our UK facility.
There’s a reason a lifting car badge catches the eye before almost anything else. It’s small, but it signals neglect — and on a classic or cherished daily driver, that’s the last impression you want to give. Re-taping car badges properly takes more than a strip of double-sided tape from a hardware shop. It requires the right adhesive, meticulous surface preparation, and precision application.
That’s exactly what Re-Tape® was built to deliver. Rather than a DIY gamble, our postal service returns your badge with computer-designed, precision-cut OEM-grade adhesive — applied by skilled technicians and quality-checked before it ever leaves our facility.
“Re-engineered originality. Your badge returned to factory-finish quality — ready to simply press back into place.”
Why Car Badges Lose Their Adhesion
Most factory badges are bonded with a foam-core VHB (Very High Bond) tape. It’s reliable when new, but it has well-known enemies: UV exposure hardens and embrittles the foam over time, moisture infiltrates at the edges, and harsh cleaning products — especially silicone-based polishes — contaminate the bond surface. Once a corner lifts, the rest follows quickly.
Even well-maintained vehicles eventually need their badges re-taped. It’s chemistry and time, not neglect. The question is how you address it — and whether the solution lasts.
Why generic tape makes things worse
A strip of double-sided tape from a DIY store is a tempting quick fix. In practice, it rarely lasts. The foam density, UV stabilisation, and adhesive chemistry used in automotive OEM tapes are very different from consumer products. A poorly bonded badge is vulnerable to vibration, car wash machinery, and temperature cycling — meaning you’ll likely be repeating the job within months.
The Risks of Re-Applying Badges Yourself
Removing a car badge without the right technique is a surprisingly easy way to damage paintwork. The original adhesive can pull at the clear coat, especially on vehicles with older or multi-layered paint. And once the badge is off, re-applying it in exactly the right position — level, centred, and permanently bonded — is harder than it looks.
- Paint lifting or scratching during badge removal
- Adhesive residue left on the panel that is difficult to remove cleanly
- Misalignment on refitting — foam tape makes contact immediately and repositioning risks the paintwork
- Consumer tape that fails within a season, meaning the whole job needs doing again
- On classic cars, risk of damaging irreplaceable original badges or aged paintwork during removal
On classic vehicles, the paint beneath the original badge is often a slightly brighter shade — protected from decades of UV. Removing the badge exposes this difference. Careful, considered handling matters far more on a heritage car than a modern one.

Classic Car Badge Replacement — Why Getting It Right Matters
For owners of classic and heritage vehicles, badge condition is often a concours consideration as much as an aesthetic one. An original enamel, chrome, or early plastic badge may be irreplaceable — which makes getting the re-tape right the first time critically important.
Re-Tape® is well suited to classic car badge work precisely because we handle the badge, not the vehicle. There is no risk to your paintwork during our process, no alignment pressure when you come to refit, and the OEM-grade adhesive we apply is selected for durability and compatibility. Whether it’s a vintage marque emblem, a period continental badge, or a British classic’s boot lid script, the process is the same: meticulous prep, precision tape, thorough quality check, and safe return to you.
Before sending a classic badge
- Photograph the badge’s position on the vehicle thoroughly before removing it
- Check whether the badge uses studs or pins alongside tape — some classics use a combination
- Handle aged enamel or chrome badges carefully during removal from the vehicle; the re-taping is our job
- If the badge is cracked or damaged, note this when placing your order so we can advise
Re-Fitting Your Badge Once It Returns
When your badge arrives from Re-Tape®, the hard work is already done. The OEM-grade adhesive is applied, cured to the badge surface, and protected by a release liner. Re-fitting is straightforward — but a little preparation on the vehicle side ensures the best result.
- Clean the panel — wipe the mounting area with isopropyl alcohol and allow it to dry fully before fitting
- Mark your alignment — use low-tack masking tape to register the badge position on the panel before removing the liner
- Press firmly and evenly — once positioned, apply steady hand pressure across the full badge surface for 30 seconds
- Allow the bond to develop — avoid washing the vehicle or exposing the fresh bond to heavy rain for 24 to 48 hours
Adhesive bonds best to a warm surface. In cold conditions, a brief pass over the panel with a hairdryer on low heat — just enough to bring it above 10°C — makes a noticeable difference to initial tack.
Precision, Sustainability, and a Result That Lasts
Re-taping car badges properly is about more than cosmetics. It’s about preserving the detail that defines a vehicle’s character — whether that’s a brand-new executive saloon or a classic that’s been in the family for decades. Factory-quality results require factory-quality materials and application.
Re-Tape® makes that simple. Send us your badge and we’ll return it with OEM-grade adhesive, a 72-hour turnaround, and APC Overnight delivery back to your door — ready for a result you can be proud of.
